Behind the Cinematography of the Oscar-Nominated Documentary "Cartel Land"

Cinematographer Matt Porwoll is based in New York City. His most recent work, Cartel Land, was nominated for a 2016 Academy Award for Best Documentary (feature). Cartel Land was also selected for competition at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival and subsequently went on to win the US Documentary Prize for Cinematography. He was one of three speakers on the documentary panel at MEWShop's "Sight, Sound & Story: The Art of Cinematography," 2015 event. We recently caught up with him to ask some in-depth questions about his career and experiences as a cinematographer.

New Color Grading courses in Resolve 12 taught by ICA instructors Dado Valentic & Warren Eagles

New York, New York – August 28, 2015 – Manhattan Edit Workshop (MEWShop), the cutting-edge authorized digital training destination for post-production and content creators, has just announced dates for new color grading courses in Resolve 12.  MEWShop’s upcoming advanced International Colorist Academy (ICA) workshops in September; will be taught by Dado Valentic, founder of U.K.’s leading creative studio MYTHERAPY and fellow instructor for the ICA.  Instructor Warren Eagles, professional color grader and co-founder of the (ICA); will once again return in October to teach our popular introductory ICA 101 and ICA 201 workshops.  “Our introductory ICA workshops with Resolve at MEWShop have been a resounding success since their inception in 2012,” comments Eagles.  “I expect our advanced classes will be of similar success and can’t wait to return to New York with our expanded line up!”

Some of Joe's other work includes Chappelle's ShowRabbit HoleUpright Citizen's BrigadeChoke, and Happyish. MEWShop Owner and Six Week Intensive Instructor Josh Apter adds, "Our Artist in Residence program always brings in some of the best in the business and Joe is among those at the top of their game. What I love about these videos from the Manhattan Edit Workshop, is that not only do I get to hear from some of the film industry’s top editors, sound designers and visual effects artists, but that I can learn from them as they show how they handle the inherent creative challenges that every film project contains. And regardless of the scale of the budget, making sure what worked in the script works on screen, or overcoming production audio problems or even massaging the footage there is, to make a scene work is the same challenge the world over.
