New York, New York – March 24, 2016 – Manhattan Edit Workshop (MEWShop), the cutting-edge authorized digital training destination for post-production and content creators, has just announced dates for new color grading courses in Resolve 12. Instructor Warren Eagles, professional color grader and co-founder of the International Colorist Academy (ICA); will once again return in April to teach our popular introductory ICA 101, ICA 201 and new ICA 205 workshops. Our upcoming advanced ICA workshops in July, will be taught by Dado Valentic founder of U.K.’s leading creative studio MYTHERAPY and fellow instructor for the ICA. “Our introductory ICA workshops with Resolve at MEWShop have been a resounding success since their inception in 2012,” comments Eagles. “As Resolve’s popularity in the industry continues, we have expanded our offerings with MEWShop in New York City.”
With our ICA 101: An Introduction to Colorist Strategies with DaVinci Resolve 12, students will learn the basics of the system. For those who wish to expand upon this foundation, there is ICA 201: Advanced Colorist Strategies with Davinci Resolve 12.
Warren’s newest class, our ICA 205 Looks and Matching with Resolve; shows students how color correction can bring your movie or sequence to life.
ICA 101: An Introduction to Colorist Strategies with DaVinci Resolve 12
A great introduction to Resolve 12 software, this class is ideal for first time users with little to no Resolve or colorist experience. This class mixes the operational side of Resolve with some practical real world training on workflows, basic color theory, grading approaches and techniques.
Among many other topics, students will learn:
- A complete demo of the system, looking at every area of the new software and how it works with the control surface
- Basic color theory, looking at the waveform, vectorscope and histogram as well as how different colors interact with increased saturation/contrast; why some colors complement each other more than others
- Using the pan, tilt, zoom and rotate controls to explore how far you can zoom in on a film or digital image; Keyframing in the timeline and auto tracking
- Resolve workflows including Film, Red, Canon, Arri Alexa, Sony F3 and other digital files
- How to create looks and styles within Resolve to get a project started, including orange and teal, cross process, bleach bypass, Schindler’s red coat, duotones and day for night

ICA 201: Advanced Colorist Strategies with DaVinci Resolve 12
This class is designed around a small, conformed sequence that students can keep as a take away. Eagles will work through the project from start to finish with students, looking not only at Resolve, but also using general colorist strategies. Students will be able to keep the project and stills, a great way to continue your learning. Among many other topics, students will learn:
- Starting with dailies, grade a look for editing from the RAW camera files
- Render ProRes or DNxHD for offline editing, H264 for the web
- Bring in audio .wav then compare the conform with the offline reference movie
- “Conform vs. Bake” – what are the pros and cons of each workflow?
- Primary grading – three-way color corrector, Curves and LOG grading
- Look creation - how to preview a look through the whole timeline using the split screen mode

ICA 205: Looks and Matching with Resolve
This two-day workshop is a creative class that concentrates on how color correction can bring your movie or sequence to life. We will review movie sequences, discussing how the color and mode enhanced the film. You will learn how to create the traditional Looks’ from movies, TV commercials and music videos. We will then focus on matching those ‘Looks,’ not only shot to shot, but also how to apply the look across a whole scene.
Warren will work with different cut sequences, each showcasing his techniques to get the best from each version. One will be a TVC beauty type commercial shot on the BMCC. This is great for doing very soft/mist type looks. He will also demonstrate with a war sequence shot on Sony F3. It’s fantastic for a Saving Private Ryan Bleach Bypass grade, a hot jungle look, or the classic Day for Night feel House of Cards reconstruction, based on the original scene shot on Arri Alexa. This will include dialogue and reenact from the original scene from the classic Netflix series. He will also address how to deal with the different challenges presented by each sequence. Students then get the chance to do the same in a timed situation, like a real session but with Warren playing the client’s role. Students are also encouraged to bring their own footage to work on and share with the class.

After several successful classes in 2015, ICA instructor Dado Valentic returns to teach our ICA 300:Feature Film Color Grading – Colorists Masterclass; taking an actual film from the preparation process for grading through to the final deliverables this July 28 – 29, 2016. This class will feature footage from Cinematographer Vanja Cernjul from Netflix’s Marco Polo season 2. In addition Dado will also be teaching our ICA 301: Color Grading Commercials – Colorists Masterclass, in which students will take a fashion commercial from preparation for grading through to the final deliverables
ICA 300: Feature Film Color Grading - Colorists Masterclass
In this two-day course we will be working on a project that was a theatrically released feature film. The feature was shot on Red Epic using anamorphic lenses. We are going to take the film from the preparation for grading through to the final deliverables. Apart from the obvious color grading work we will also take an extensive look at the new features in Resolve V12 for online and mastering from a feature film perspective.
