Manhattan Edit Workshop announces new workshop for 2009!

This five-day hands-on workshop taught by Mewshop owner Josh Apter, explores  techniques of documentary editing - from the creative decisions that make a good story great, to established workflow methods for picture and sound that every editor should know.

During the week there will be screenings and deconstruction of clips from a wide range of non-fiction genres.  Students will cut a number of exercises using real footage from real documentaries - looking at how editing can affect character and story, and create or alter reality.  There will be frequent screening and critique of each other's work.

You'll also learn proven methods of media management for long-form projects, effective approaches to structure and storytelling, and basic principles of sound design geared towards cleaning up an edit for festivals and broadcast.

The April 2009 Workshop features Editor Anand Kamalakar and Director Beth Toni Kruvant from the award winning feature Heart of Stone.  They will lead an in-depth discussion of their editing process, including structure, character and distribution strategy.

You'll also edit part of a live documentary project, Biking For Obama about Ryan Bowen's epic ride from LA to DC (yes, on his bicycle) where he attended the inauguration of Barack Obama.  Students will consult with Ryan, who will be in attendance, and help shape questions for an interview to be conducted early in the week.  The footage will then be incorporated into existing footage and edited for the week's final project.
