Manhattan Edit Workshop Gives Back to NYC's Aspiring Youth and Filmmaking Community

New York, New York – August 19, 2011 – Manhattan Edit Workshop (MEWShop), the cutting-edge authorized digital training destination, is giving back to New York City’s aspiring youth and filmmaking community in more ways than one.  With strong roots in Manhattan, the artistically driven training center is extending its branches throughout the city and surrounding areas to help foster growth and stability for budding filmmakers of all ages.  Recently partnering with the Long Island Film Academy for a beginners course in editing, MEWShop Owner Josh Apter gave the kids a kick-start course in film editing to help aid them in creating their summer camp short film projects.  “When we weren’t making excursions to the big city to visit MEWShop, we were filming scenes for our short film projects and editing the scenes together afterware,” comments Ryan Bowen, Co-Director, Long Island Film Academy.  “Thanks to Josh and MEWShop, our young cinematographers quickly began to see how critical it was to make the right choices when filming scenes.  They thoroughly enjoyed the experience and got some expert advice and tips from Josh.”  Check out some of the videos created by the LIFA students by clicking here.

Manhattan Edit Workforce and More…
Always looking for ways to connect their students with top post houses and employers in the NYC community, MEWShop created a program known as Manhattan Edit Workforce.  Each student in the facilities Six-Week Intensive Art of Editing Workshop cuts an editor reel in class, which is then coupled with the student’s resume and posted on his or her own website. Participating employers – including 25 of NYC’s top post houses – are then notified via email with log-in information each time there is a new group of graduates in order for them to browse through the reels and contact students directly.  The program has developed a direct line of communication between aspiring filmmakers and editors and employers, connecting all aspects of the local filmmaking and editing community.

In addition to teaming up with local youth groups to teach kids about the art of filmmaking and editing and the Workforce Program, MEWShop also serves as sponsor for the Karen Schmeer Film Editing Fellowship. Created in memory of gifted editor Karen Schmeer (Fog of War, Fast, Cheap & Out of Control, Bobby Fischer Against the World), the fellowship aims to assist emerging editors by supporting and developing their talent, expanding their creative community, and furthering their career aspirations.  The fellowship, now in its second year, offers a wide variety of opportunities for promising film editors, in both documentary and fiction.  “It’s extremely important for us to be involved in the New York filmmaking community and to give back in as many ways as we can,” says Josh Apter, owner and founder, Manhattan Edit Workshop.  “In partnering with local youth groups and sponsoring film fellowships we are able to lend a hand in the growth of the filmmaking community and keep the spirit of creativity and art alive.  It’s always inspirational to me to see young kids put their talents to use and go after their dreams of becoming a filmmaker or editor.  Fostering that creative spirit in our community and giving aspiring filmmakers a chance to shine is definitely what its all about for us.”
